The movie “About Fifty” is screening at Kings Bay Cinema on January 18, 2012. The two stars of the film,  Martin Grey and Drew Pillsbury, will be in attendance and there will be a Q & A with the actors after the movie.

In this modern comedy, we meet two long-time golf-buddies, Adam, going through a trial separation from his wife of 15 years, and Jon, who is not only losing work to the “young guy,” but also dealing with a “generous” prostate. They decide to take off on a weekend journey to let loose and re-live the Palm Springs get-a-ways of their younger days but meet with unexpected results. Struggling to fit in with the younger crowd, they find surprising comfort through encounters with women nearer their own age. As the weekend progresses, both are forced to come to a truce with middle life’s predicaments.
“About Fifty” was an official selection of the 2011 Atlanta Film Festival and the Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale and Amelia Island international film festivals.

The screening of “About Fifty” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, at Kingsbay Cinema followed by a Q&A session with the film’s stars, Martin Grey and Drew Pillsbury. Grey and Pillsbury will offer insights into how this charming film got made on an extremely low budget.
Grey has worked regularly for more than 20 years in film and television, with directors such as Terry Zwigoff, Barry Levinson, and Howard Deutsch. Most recently he recurred in NBC’s “Life” as Mark Conover and has guest starred on shows such as “Cold Case,” “CSI: Miami,” “Desperate Housewives” and “ER.” Pillsbury has worked for more than 25 years as an actor, getting his start opposite Griffin Dunne and Madonna in “Who’s That Girl.” He also starred in “Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.” “About Fifty” marks his third produced film as a screenwriter.

The event is organized by the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance.

COMMUNITY THEATRE IS FOUNDED IN ST. MARYS

The idea of bringing back community theatre was conceived after the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance discovered many talented residents who don’t have a year-round outlet for their talent. Recent film and television productions gave locals the opportunity to work with performance arts, and the Crooked Rivers productions offer locals a chance to be onstage for an annual performance. Students have myriad performance and theatre support opportunities at the local high school. But Camden County adults desiring to be involved in year-round performances had to go north to Glynn County or south to northeast Florida venues to practice their art…until now.

St. Marys Little Theatre founder Barbara Ryan was so impressed by the talent pool in Camden County, she decided the time was right to establish a community theatre. With the assistance of a Board of Directors that include an international singing star, an award-winning playwright, a set design professional, and an entertainment industry pioneer, Ryan feels confident that the organization is well positioned to bring stellar theatrical performances to St. Marys.

“The mission of the St. Marys Little Theatre is to enrich lives and enhance the cultural composition of the arts in Camden County,” Ryan said. “We plan to accomplish that mission through community participation in theater education, live performances, workshops, and other outreach programs associated with theater arts.”
Ryan said the theatre will provide a forum for aspiring youths to develop as well.

“Research shows that young people who participate in community theatre have the opportunity to develop skills such as improved communication, critical thinking, and social skills—all key components of any self-development program,” Ryan said. “For people of all ages, sharing the community theatre experience can enhance the understanding of themselves and others.”

Ryan will serve as chair of the newly formed St. Marys Little Theatre, and L. J. Williams will serve as vice chair. Williams said that the theatre group plans to “inspire, nurture, challenge, amaze, educate, and empower artists and audiences” throughout Camden County and beyond.

“Our goal is to develop—over time—into a regional destination so that people from outlying areas will be drawn to patronize the theatre and thereby gain exposure to a new diversity of cultural arts,” Williams said.

Though the theatre group doesn’t now have its own building to call home, that is their ultimate goal.

Williams said that, in the meantime, there are two good venues for performances in downtown St. Marys—Southern Junction and I Live Center of the Arts, and the SMLT board will be talking to the owners of both about performances.

According to Williams and Ryan, the first two performances for SMLT are indicative of the variety the SMLT plans to offer. “Man of La Mancha” is slated to be the group’s first production. Ryan admits that a more challenging first production would be hard to find but feels that it will set the stage for audience expectations and establish a precedent for the kind of quality the theatre will deliver. The second production will be a musical based on the history of St. Marys—a historically accurate depiction of the milestones that have shaped the legacy of St. Marys. According to Ryan, to get a preview of that production, all one has to do is visit the new St. Marys Welcome Center and read the historic mural that is displayed there.

“There will be a scene to correlate with each milestone depicted on the mural, beginning with the Timucuan Indians right on through to the establishment of Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base,” Ryan said. “This entire production will be based on an original script and music score that we hope the community will help us create.”
The SMLT Board invites the public to view the mural, and anyone who is musically inclined and would like to write one of the scenes (and/or correlating songs) to get in touch with the board by making contact at www.stmaryslittletheatre.com.

“We’re amazed at the talent that is in our community,” Ryan said, “and we want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to express their talents whether it’s through writing, acting, making costumes, or behind the scenes support.”

The St. Marys Little Theatre is a Georgia nonprofit organization and plans to raise funds through grants, membership drives, corporate sponsorships, fundraising events, admissions, and private donors.

The Coastal Georgia Film Alliance invites Coastal Georgia and Northeast Florida residents to polish up their bling and dust off their tuxedoes to attend the November 13 “Hollywood Nights” Gala to be held in downtown St. Marys. Attendees will be met on the red carpet by Joan Rivers (character), snapped by the paparazzi, and whisked inside for a night of high glamour. According to Coastal Georgia Film Alliance Chair Doug Vaught, the evening promises to be one of St. Marys’ most exciting. “From the moment the valet parker takes your car and you step onto the red carpet, you will find yourself immersed in a world of celebrity,” Vaught said. “Everybody likes to be treated like a star, and at Hollywood Nights, everybody will be a star.”

The Coastal Georgia Film Alliance designed “Hollywood Nights” as a fundraiser to help support the purchase of museum-quality items for the St. Marys Film Museum. In addition to a star-quality dinner, attendees will have the opportunity to bid on unique auction items including walk-on roles in movie and television projects.

Donna Boyett, Chair of the Gala, said her committee is assembling a lineup of auction packages that even stars would like to bid on. “Chic getaways, sports packages, and arts and romance packages have already been assembled,” Boyett said. “One item that we think will bring a top price is dinner for eight at the Historic Clark House with a local dignitary serving as butler.” Boyett went on to say that though the event is months away, the Film Alliance has already sold 50% of the available 200 tickets. “They make a great early Christmas present,” Boyett said. “But mostly people are making reservations in anticipation of something quite out of the ordinary for our area. They won’t be disappointed.”

The 25th Annual Crawfish Festival is a family oriented event and offers something for all ages. This year’s festival takes place on April 23rd from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and April 24th from 8:00am to 6:30pm.

Entertainment is offered on Friday night from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the Satilla Waterfront Park Stage. Saturday’s entertainment begins at 9:00 am and continues throughout the day at the waterfront stage as well as the gazebo stage located in the Arts & Crafts Area.

A children’s amusement area provides activities and games on Friday night and all day Saturday.

The Crawfish Parade is one of the highlights of the festival and is enjoyed by everyone. It begins at 10:00am at the corner of U.S. 17 and E. 10th Street and features entries such as bands, clowns, floats and horses.

Food concessions offering such mouth watering treats as Crawfish Boil, Crawfish Woodbine (Etoufee), Fried Chicken Dinners, Red Beans and Rice, Homemade Desserts, Barbecue, Funnel Cakes, Ice Cream and much more are available Friday night and all day Saturday. The Woodbine United Methodist Church will sponsor a breakfast on Saturday morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. The church is located at the corner of E. 4th Street and U.S. 17.

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Local author Harold Cohn from St. Marys recently released his children’s book “Three Buzzards and Apple Pie” through Tate Publishing Company. For many years Harold told the story to his son, and finally he decided to write it down.Three Buzzards and Apple Pie is a Lesson in choices. The main characters are the three boys—Hade, Bo, and Drew. The boys decide to disobey their parents and venture past their usual play area one day. That decision sets off a journey for the boys and everyone involved.
