Improve your fitness and have fun at the same time. The whole family can participate in this event on Saturday, February 12, 2011, starting at 8:30 AM at the St. Marys Elementary School bus bort.

There are two runs taking place that morning. One run is a 1 mile fun run and will take place on the walking trail located on the SMES field. The second run is a 5k. The route starts at the SMES, travels along Dilworth and the waterfront, across Hall street, and winds through Ready, Meeting Street, and Norris before returning to the SMES gym. All participants that register by 2/10 will get a run t-shirt.

In many places around the country, it’s a tradition to bring in the New Year with a cleansing dip in ice cold water. In St Marys, we have our own version of the Polar Bear Plunge.
Here you can take trip down the big slide at the St. Marys Aquatic Center (301 Herb Bauer Drive), on Saturday, January 8th noon to 2 PM. St Marys Aquatic Center says that admission is free to all who dare to brave the cold temperatures. By the way, the temperature on Saturday is going to be somewhere around 60 F – so really, how brave do you need to be?

Hay Days comes to St. Marys October 9th and to kick-off the fun-filled family event, you can “Build-A-Scarecrow”. Make him goofy, make her silly with a floppy hat, or even make a scary face, just let your imagination run wild. Come out and create a scarecrow with your kids, neighbors, church group or Scouting group!

Kids of all ages are invited to Build-A-Scarecrow at Orange Hall on Saturday, October 9th at 10:00 AM. The first of the Hay Days events begin with everything you need to make the perfect Scarecrow available for only $20. We will find just the right place for your unique Scarecrow downtown or take it home to bring a touch of autumn to your lawn. Bordering Osborne Street the Scarecrows will welcome locals and visitors alike to town throughout the Hay Days celebration.

The Kingsland First United Methodist Church host the annual “Fall Festival & Trunk or Treat” on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:30 PM in the downtown Kingsland Royal District. The National and State Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores were just released and Camden County High School continues to establish new records of excellence with the highest composite scores in the schools history. The SAT scores are a composite of Math, Reading and Writing scores on a standardized test administered to all interested juniors and seniors across the United States. These scores are the most widely used tests by colleges and universities to identify students that are academically ready for college. The state of Georgia has historically been behind the national average, but Camden County High School has not only surpassed the state average, but is closing rapidly on national averages as well.
The average reading scores for Camden County High students was 505 out of a possible 800. This score surpassed the state average by 17 points and was 4 points higher than the national average. Since 2006, reading scores have gone up 16 points. In math, CCHS students averaged 505. Although this was slightly lower than the national average it was 15 points higher than the state average. Again, since 2006 the scores have improved by 25 points. Although the average writing score was up 10 points at 473, this is still two points below the state average. Principal, John Tucker stated that students who have challenged themselves with the Advanced Placement Language classes faired far better. “Our students who have taken the AP Language class as juniors have surpassed the state and national scores in writing for three consecutive years. We continue to encourage those students that intend to take the SAT’s and attend a four year university to take advantage of our Advanced Placement classes”.
The combined SAT score for CCHS students this past year was 1483. This score surpassed the state average by 30 points. “We still need to emphasize that our college bound seniors need to take the SAT or the ACT. Our scores indicate a steady improvement in the last five years and we intend to continue these improvements with our emphasis on AP courses and increased academic rigor”, said Tucker. Tucker went on to say “Although we are proud of our improvement over the past few years we will not be content until we set the standard not only for the state but the nation as well.”

This year the Independence Day Celebration in St Marys is going to be held on July 3, 2010, instead of Sunday.

4th of July Festival & Fireworks
More than 100 vendors participate as well as incredible musical entertainment and local fun including a Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest and a Watermelon Eating Contest for all ages. Children’s rides and activities are offered throughout the festival.

The highlight of the festival is of course the fantastic fireworks display at the waterfront.

For the best seats in the house to watch the stunning fireworks display over the St. Marys River the St. Marys Kiwanis are once again inviting the public to come aboard the Cumberland Queen or Cumberland Princess. According to St. Marys Kiwanis president Allen Rassi, “these will definitely be the best ringside seats for viewing the spectacular fireworks display.” Rassi says that this year’s fireworks production will match most elaborate fireworks display in the history of the festival with 25 minutes of continuous fireworks.

The 25th Annual Crawfish Festival is a family oriented event and offers something for all ages. This year’s festival takes place on April 23rd from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and April 24th from 8:00am to 6:30pm.

Entertainment is offered on Friday night from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the Satilla Waterfront Park Stage. Saturday’s entertainment begins at 9:00 am and continues throughout the day at the waterfront stage as well as the gazebo stage located in the Arts & Crafts Area.

A children’s amusement area provides activities and games on Friday night and all day Saturday.

The Crawfish Parade is one of the highlights of the festival and is enjoyed by everyone. It begins at 10:00am at the corner of U.S. 17 and E. 10th Street and features entries such as bands, clowns, floats and horses.

Food concessions offering such mouth watering treats as Crawfish Boil, Crawfish Woodbine (Etoufee), Fried Chicken Dinners, Red Beans and Rice, Homemade Desserts, Barbecue, Funnel Cakes, Ice Cream and much more are available Friday night and all day Saturday. The Woodbine United Methodist Church will sponsor a breakfast on Saturday morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. The church is located at the corner of E. 4th Street and U.S. 17.

If you ever thought about building your own raft and racing down the river, now is your chance. This year it’s the second time around for the event Fun in the Sun Expo, which includes the popular raft race. If raft racing is too much excitment for you, there is also a duck race which one assumes is much less demanding – at least for the human participants.

The event is scheduled for Saturday May 29, 2010 from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.

The 2nd annual Fun in the Sun Expo is a celebration of the start of summer held at Howard Gilman Memorial Park on the river in historic downtown St. Marys. The event features a 5K Fun Run, the 12th Annual Rotary Club of Camden County Charity Duck Race, the 2nd Annual St. Marys River Raft Race, the 2nd Annual Pet Fashion Show, the 2nd Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest, a free concert by Sound of Freedom, kids amusements and music.

Admission is free for this day of family fun.

The Spring Break Camp will run March 29 through April 2, 2010. Kids drop off starts at 7:30am and pick up is at 5:30pm at the Camden Rec Center. This Day Camp is $80/week per child OR daily fee of $20.00. One time registration fee of $10. You may register for only the weeks you are interested in participating. This is for children between the ages of 5-15 years old. Please bring a lunch for your child.

Children play games indoors and outdoors. Swimming is scheduled daily, weather permitting. Other activities include arts and crafts, movies, and lots of FUN!
