The movie “About Fifty” is screening at Kings Bay Cinema on January 18, 2012. The two stars of the film, Martin Grey and Drew Pillsbury, will be in attendance and there will be a Q & A with the actors after the movie.

In this modern comedy, we meet two long-time golf-buddies, Adam, going through a trial separation from his wife of 15 years, and Jon, who is not only losing work to the “young guy,” but also dealing with a “generous” prostate. They decide to take off on a weekend journey to let loose and re-live the Palm Springs get-a-ways of their younger days but meet with unexpected results. Struggling to fit in with the younger crowd, they find surprising comfort through encounters with women nearer their own age. As the weekend progresses, both are forced to come to a truce with middle life’s predicaments.
“About Fifty” was an official selection of the 2011 Atlanta Film Festival and the Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale and Amelia Island international film festivals.

Did you participate as an extra in “The Eye of the Hurrricane” – or do you know someone who did? This movie production touched almost everyone in Camden County – and now you can get your own prop from the film. Coastal Georgia Film Alliance is organizing an auction on June 18, 2011.

At the recent preview of locally-filmed Eye of the Hurricane, film star Gregory Cruz made a surprise appearance. Around his neck hung the alligator tooth necklace that he wore as the mysterious Seminole in the movie. That necklace, along with dozens of other Eye of the Hurricane props and costumes will be auctioned off on June 18 to raise funds that will enable the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance to bring more film projects to Coastal Georgia.

Part of the proceeds from the auction will also benefit the newly formed St. Marys Little Theatre, an organization birthed to act as an incubator for local film talent. According to Film Alliance Chair Doug Vaught, the necklace will be a popular item, ranking right up there with the truck that Campbell Scott drove in the movie.

“There is a lot of nostalgia surrounding the items that we will be auctioning off on June 18,” Vaught said. “Hundreds of locals who were extras in Eye of the Hurricane may be interested in acquiring a momento of the movie. Also, many of the 450 people who recently attended the film’s previews in St. Marys have expressed an interest as well.”

Barbara Ryan, Vice-Chair of the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance and Chair of the St. Marys Little Theatre said that the auction is an excellent way to get the community more educated about the economic impact that movie-making can have for our area.

“The more our community understands and becomes involved in the entertainment industry arena, the more they will appreciate how this industry can make a difference in the economy,” Ryan said. “Georgia outpaces nearly every state in the nation in terms of incentives for filmmakers, and St. Marys and the surrounding area are in an enviable position to capitalize even more on the economic advantages of aggressively pursuing film production.”

In addition to the thousands of hours that Film Alliance volunteers put in each year to pursue the film industry, it takes money to support strong marketing programs. That, according to Ryan and Vaught, is the point of the auction.

Auction attendees will be amused and fascinated at times by the items that will come up for bid—a dozen or so of Homer’s lost eyeballs, the Seminole’s canoe, the truck, the wheelbarrow and its contents that kids collected after the hurricane, and costumes from every major player are part of the auction’s program. All items will come with a certification signed by Eye of the Hurricane Writer and Director Jesse Wolfe.

The auction will be held June 18 at Southern Junction in St. Marys—preview at 6pm, auction at 7pm.

For more information, call 912-729-1103 or email barbara@coastalgeorgiafilm.org.

St. Marys, GA—Where does one go to find a skull from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” or a mummy leg from Universal Pictures’ “The Mummy”? One could go to a Hollywood studio’s bone yard or, perhaps, a major prop warehouse. Or for those who live in or visit the Coastal Georgia area, they can simply go to the new St. Marys Film Museum at 300 Osborne Street in Downtown St. Marys, Georgia.

The St. Marys Film Museum, a new addition to the line-up of attractions in St. Marys, will open Saturday, April 16 and continue to be open, thereafter, every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Film Museum is a project of the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance (CGFA), the organization responsible for bringing the recent filming of “Eye of the Hurricane,” (a feature film starting Campbell Scott and Melanie Lynskey), and two TV pilot projects to the area. According to CGFA Co-founder and Chair, Doug Vaught, the museum exemplifies part of the organization’s mission to “encourage education and appreciation of the film industry.”

“The Film Museum is a project we’ve been working on since the inception of the Film Alliance in 2010,” Vaught said. “And now, thanks to the support and contributions by local citizens and the hard work of the Film Alliance board of directors, the museum has come to life.” Vaught cited Joe and Terra Lucent as one example of the many people who came forward to bring the attraction to the city. The Lucents donate the space where the Film Museum is housed.

Displays such as the skull and the mummy’s leg, along with others that include boots worn in “Armageddon” and memorabilia from blockbusters like “Sea Biscuit” and “Angels and Demons,” were purchased with funds raised at last fall’s Hollywood Nights Film Gala. Other items including a Mary Pickford display and circa 1920s theater architectural elements were contributed by local supporters of the museum.

Barbara Ryan, Film Alliance Co-founder and Vice Chair, said kudos should go to all those who have stepped forward to help create such an interesting attraction that both visitors and residents can enjoy.

“It’s a little sliver of Hollywood right here in the Low Country,” Ryan said. “Our plans are to have revolving exhibits so that residents will have a reason to visit the museum several times a year. Ryan (who is also Chair of the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau) said that the museum will enhance an already impressive collection of museum experiences that draw tourists to St. Marys.

“We already have the Submarine Museum, the Orange Hall House Museum, and the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum,” Ryan said. “Add to that the museum-like experiences that visitors can enjoy at the Cumberland Island Visitors Center and the new St. Marys Welcome Center, and you’ve got more museum attractions than many towns four times the size of St. Marys.”

Ryan said the new museum will help St. Marys compete with other destinations for the treasured tourism dollars that help fuel the local economy. St. Marys Tourism Director Angela Wigger agreed.

“The number of visitors to our welcome center has skyrocketed since we set up our new location near the waterfront,” Wigger said. “Having the Film Museum will give our visitors one more reason to explore our city and discover all our great shops and restaurants.”

St. Marys Film Museum Curator Kelly Davis said a cadre of volunteers helped set up the museum. “I even drafted my husband,” Davis said.
Scott Davis built the display stands that showcase the Hollywood props.

The public is invited to an open house at the St. Marys Film Museum at 300 Osborne Street on Saturday, April 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting will be held at noon. Anyone who would like to volunteer to staff the Film Museum should call Kelly Davis at 912-674-4052.
The public is invited to view “To Save a Life,” the free movie that will be shown at Southeast Community Church (SECC) on Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3 at 6:00 p.m. “To Save A Life” is a feature length film that swept theaters nationwide during its early 2010 release. Overnight, the film received a #1 Fandango Fan rating and maintained it for over a month. According to Southeast Community Church (SECC) Pastor Steve Curtis, when the movie was released, critics and youth workers raved, and families were challenged and encouraged.

“Every teen and parent needs to see this film,” Curtis said. “It has changed the direction of teens in communities across the nation, and it can change the direction for our teens locally.”

Curtis went on to say that SECC is bringing the movie to town because many families with teens are struggling to cope with the challenges of everyday life and the movie’s message can inspire teens to make the right choices.

“To Save a Life” is the story of All-American teen Jake Taylor who seems to have it all. But after a childhood friend’s death, Jake’s world turns upside down, and he is forced to make a decision that could change his life forever.

Curtis said, “To Save a Life is about making unexpected choices and sacrifices, while having the courage and determination to persevere against all odds.” He said that “To Save a Life” has started a movement all across the country.

“In communities just like ours, groups are working together to make an organized effort to reach local teens in crisis,” he continued. “Groups like ours are dedicated to offering every teen the opportunity to see this film and hear its powerful message of hope.”

To extend the impact of the message, beginning October 10, SECC will launch a six-week series of Sunday messages, Youth meetings, and adult small groups, encouraging discussions and exploration of how the message can change lives.

The free movie will be shown at Southeast Community Church, 790 May Creek Drive, Kingsland (turn behind Cracker Barrel). Visit www.secchurch.com and click Movies to see the trailer. Or call 912 729-8480.

After weeks of research and discovery of potential film locations for Braveart’s filming of “Eye of the Hurricane,” Hollywood Producer Susan Johnson has announced the project will be filmed in St. Marys, Georgia.

“Eye of the Hurricane” writer and director Jesse Wolfe said it was more than the beauty of the area that helped make his and Johnson’s decision.

Actor Campbell Scott will play the leading role in “Eye of the Hurricane.” Son of Hollywood icon George C. Scott, more than 20 movies comprise his film dossier including the poignant “Dying Young” that co-starred Julia Roberts. Jose Zuniga also plays a leading role in “Eye of the Hurricane.” His credits include the film “Twilight” and others, as well as starring roles in television series “Law and Order,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” and “Ghost Whisperer.”

A plot synopsis of “Eye of the Hurricane” describes it as: “A compelling family drama about a small Florida community struggling to put their lives back together in the wake of a devastating hurricane. In the spirit of ‘Stand by Me’ and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, ‘Eye of the Hurricane’ is told through the eyes of a determined child, a troubled adolescent, a wounded parent, and a loyal friend.”

With filming set to begin in August, Writer/Director Wolfe sees “Eye of the Hurricane” as a prequel to much more filming in the Southeast.

“I originally wanted to shoot the film in Florida, as it is a story based in Florida,” Wolfe said. “But from the moment we drove into St. Marys, I knew I would change my mind. Potential locations leapt out at me each time we turned a corner, and the hospitality, enthusiasm and charm of the townsfolk, sealed the deal. I will be making my ‘Florida film’ in St. Marys, Georgia.”

“We are thrilled to be shooting ‘Eye of the Hurricane’ in St. Marys, due in no small part of the folks at the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance. Initially we were looking for a location that could match the Florida Everglades, but once we saw St. Marys, the possibilities were endless,” Johnson stated. “We saw every location we needed in the span of four hours and became so enamored of the look of St. Marys that the script has been rewritten to utilize the entire town. And we could not have received a warmer welcome. By the time we finish production, I’m sure one of us will have moved in permanently!”

Janet Brinko, Director of the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau, sees the economic effect impacting long after the production is finished.

“People love to visit places where movies were filmed,” Brinko said. “After the filming of ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’ in Savannah, their area tourism soared. Having ‘Eye of the Hurricane’ filmed here will be like having a two-hour picture postcard for St. Marys distributed all over the world.”
To see the kind of picture postcard Brinko envisioned, one can visit www.havensfoot.com and view the location visuals posted by the production company showing the beauty of St. Marys and the surrounding area.

ST. MARYS AD HOC GROUP TEAMS UP WITH AMELIA ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL TO LAUNCH ST. MARYS FILM SOCIETY

ST. MARYS, GA—In the wake of Amelia Island’s recent success as a film magnet, executives from the Amelia Island Film Festival met with St. Marys residents recently to discuss a “sistership” in the advancement of film production and promotion for both areas. According to Tony McAdoo, president of the Amelia Island Film Festival, the collaboration is a natural.

“With the Cumberland Sound Ferry bridging the two towns, it makes a lot of sense to piggyback on each other’s resources,” McAdoo said. “Here we have two states separated by a mere river and each having its unique characteristics. We’re proud to offer our visitors and residents another dimension of entertainment and historic exploration by supporting the development of a St. Marys film organization.”

St. Marys Film Society organizers’ ultimate mission is to position St. Marys as a valuable location option for filmmakers. Toward that goal, they plan to begin by getting acquainted with film industry movers and shakers—producers, directors, writers, and actors, and building a portfolio of resources for the industry. One of the St. Marys Film Society organizers, Doug Vaught, said that Savannah has nothing on St. Marys when it comes to being an attractive location to make a movie.

“We trump them on cemeteries. Our diversity of geography and our water realm including Cumberland Island presents filmmakers with an excellent backdrop for drama, comedy, and adventure films.” Vaught went on to cite the recent filming of Resurrection Fern in St. Marys and on Cumberland Island as a good beginning toward getting the word out. He also went on to say that our proximity to the Jacksonville International Airport and technical talents available in neighboring Jacksonville will add to St. Marys’ appeal as a film location. Donna Boyett, proprietor of The French Quarter in Downtown St. Marys agreed.

“St. Marys and our surrounding area has much to offer, and as a business owner I’m eager to reach out to the film community and show them how easy we are to work with,” said Boyett, another Film Society organizer. “The economic advantages of having film crews in our town spending money are evident, but the residual benefit of boosted tourism like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil brought to Savannah has even greater positive ramifications.”

Thus far, two events are in the planning stages as part of the St. Marys Film Society launch. On February 18, one week before the 2010 Amelia Island Film Festival begins, the Film Society plans to host a screening of one of Amelia Island’s entries at a downtown St. Marys location. Then during the actual Amelia Island Film Festival (February 25-March 1, 2010), the St. Marys Film Society will host a “meet and greet” in St. Marys. Guests of the “meet and greet”—film execs and artists—will come from Amelia Island by ferry and visit with several businesses in order to familiarize themselves with what St. Marys has to offer.

“We have to walk before we run,” said Vaught. “This year we see ourselves as an ‘appetizer’ for the Amelia Island Film Festival. Future years will hold bigger things and bigger returns for our city.”

Looking to the future, Vaught and other Film Society organizers endeavor to form a film commission and take advantage of an official affiliation with Georgia Economic Development and all that they offer local organizations.

“More than 600 films and television projects have been shot in Georgia,” said Janet Brinko, Director of the St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It’s good for tourism, and that means it’s good for our economy. There’s no reason why St. Marys can’t capitalize on our natural beauty and our business-friendly environment.”

According to industry statistics, for every $1 spent in the promotion of filmmaking on a local basis, $7 is returned to the local economy. Georgia Senator Jeff Chapman said that “In a time when cities around the nation are searching for ways to rejuvenate their economy, community leaders who are thinking outside of the box can add great value to a city’s long term plans. The organizers of the St. Marys Film Society are to be commended for their vision and their willingness to do the heavy lifting to make things happen.”

Anyone in the community who would like to get involved in the St. Marys Film Society is urged to call 912-882-4000.
